Alma has been an actress, playwright, and avid researcher of arts-based education for over eighteen years. She specializes in utilizing theater to teach the Spanish language, with an emphasis on developing communication skills with students who have special needs. With a theater degree from the Centro Universitario de Teatro de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and experience as a theater company member of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Chihuahua, Alma has performed in and directed many productions. She teaches courses in Commedia dell’Arte, improvisation, production, playwriting, puppet theater, storytelling, mask theater, reader’s theater, and Teatro en Español.

Prior to joining Walden, Alma taught Spanish at Wade Thomas Elementary School in Marin County and Hillcrest School in Oakland. She has been at Walden since 2008 where she teaches Spanish. She is interested in meditation as a therapeutic tool for learners with ADHD, Buddhism, and Nonviolent Communication (NVC).
