Sample Integrated Units

Integrated units are an exciting, multi-disciplinary teaching method. Based on student interests, each year Walden teachers design at least two integrated units, layering learning experiences by exploring a topic through multiple lenses. For example, a unit on insects might include: observation and measurement of live insects, trips to the zoo or museum, a choreographed bee waggle dance, insect-themed stories, and design and construction of proportionally correct bug costumes. By layering learning experiences, a child develops a deeper understanding and connection to the material, and learns that many different tools and approaches can be used to understand the world. The sample units in this section demonstrate that one unit of study can be broadened to include many subject areas, including the arts.
